Comments for Delayed Clot in Ped Tube

Delayed Clot in Pedi tubes

We have this experience on pediatric patients as well, in the 2 ml draw tube. The tech checks for clots when the specimen arrives, then 20 minutes later (it was a whole blood PFA on a 1 day old) re-checked for clots before running the assay. At this time tiny clots had formed. Apparently it is a common occurance and is thought to be activation of the platelets from trying to obtain so much blood from a tiny baby. I am in the process of looking for a smaller tube and better system for obtaining coag specimens from pediatric patients, if anyone has any suggestions.
